A Beginners Guide
Beginners guide to studio and salon insurance
If you run your own salon or studio then you do have specific needs when it comes to insurance cover. There are a variety of things that you need to have covered and a specialist studio and salon insurance policy may well be the best solution for many salon/studio owners.
So, what will you get from this kind of insurance policy? In general terms, you will need to look at various factors. So, for example, you may need to take out insurance cover for:
- Your salon or studio itself
- Any employees you have
- Any people who use your services
- Your business as a whole.
There are various features and benefits of studio and salon insurance that you may need to make sure that you get the right levels of cover. You may not need all of the cover options listed. Each salon and studio owner will have their own needs in this situation. Let’s take a look at your options in more detail:
- Buildings and contents cover — this will give you insurance cover in case anything happens to your salon/studio premises and the contents that you have in it.
- Employers’ liability cover — if you employ any staff then typically you must have this cover as part of your studio and salon insurance policy. You have no choice on this — it is a legal requirement, though there are some exceptions.
- Public liability cover – this will simply protect you if someone visiting your salon/studio whether as a customer or not, has an accident and decides to take legal action against you.
- Business interruption cover — this feature may be useful to you if you were unable to work from your salon/studio. So, for example, if you had to close down for a period of time after a fire this kind of cover may help you with your loss of income. However, not all salon insurance policies offer this cover, so do check the small print.
You can look at general commercial insurance policies at this stage but you may find that they won’t necessarily give you all the cover you need. You work in a specialist business and may, therefore, find it worthwhile to look at specialist studio and salon insurance options first to check out what you really want.
